Our very own Bonsai Garden at Lake Merritt is the home to some of the finest Bonsai on the west coast
The BGLM, located in the Gardens at Lake Merritt in Oakland’s Lakeside Park, is the only major all-volunteer bonsai garden in the country and houses some of the most important bonsai in the US.

Bay-Friendly Gardening mimics natural systems, which recycle everything—water, debris, and nutrients—endlessly. It pays attention to climate and local conditions and uses appropriate plants that are adapted to those conditions. It follows maintenance practices that support the goals of conserving resources and reducing waste.

The story of the collection of rhododendron species—and hybrids—at the Gardens at Lake Merritt reveals a unique interplay of three elements: there is a benign climate, there are energetic volunteers and park staff, and there’s allure of the plants themselves.
